Kotaku is reporting the possiblity that Square Enix could be halting production on one of the three Final Fantasy XIII projects. For those of you not in the know, the enxt installment in the Final Fantasy series was actually scoped out as a trilogy called Fabula Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy XIII. In the trilogy are two console titles and one for mobile phones. The mobile phone title, Agito, was going to be exclusively for the Japanese market. I saw was because now there's word on the wind that the project might be shelved.
I come to this prospect with mixed feelings. While a Japanese-exclusive title means I have little hope of every seeing it, there was hope that we overseas would eventually receive a port in some form. However, if Agito never gets mobile (pun only slightly intended) then we will miss that third part of the story, and I can't help but think that it takes all three games to fully complete the story. Of course, I could be wrong on this, the Final Fantasy world has been known to branch before. In any case, I'll keep an eye out for any more speculation on Agito, and whether or not the game will get off the ground.

I'm not entirely convinced that FFXIII's story will remain incomplete. The actual Agito plot seemed less grounded then the other two, and I suspect anything particularly important to either game will be folded in to the primary title. I'm willing to bet that the connection to Agito was going to be primarily minor references, such as the ones to Before Crisis in Crisis Core. Admittedly, I could be wrong, but I get the feeling that Agito was going to be a worldbuilding game, less then one important to the plot, and if Square-Enix is good, they can adapt those elements into Versus or XIII proper without too much effort.
Maybe this means they can take some of the color from Agito and put it into the other two games. Because seriously, they look boring as shit.
(Note: I mean that in a purely visual sense, not a gameplay/story sense.)
Who needs color when you have psuedo-lesbian summons who fuse into a motorcycle!
Without a great deal of information one way or another, I am going to hope out hope that the game will indeed continue production, but if it doesn't I think ImpAtom has a point. The more I think about it the less I think a mobile title will be core to the themes and plotlines of the series. That being said, it was placed in the trilogy for a reason. Wow, waffle much Mandifesto?
I was at the Square-Enix press conference that announced Agito, and they said there it was going to be a mobile phone-only MMO. Pretty ambitious!
If it is canned, it could mean we could be losing some significant setting info, but it probably wouldn't damage the actual narrative of the other two games.
IIRC, every part of FFXIII is starring different characters, so they'll be essentially stand-alone games that happen to support each other in subtle ways. Kinda like the Ivalice Alliance games, I think?
These decisions makes me really sad, too. I'm sure it must be due to a cultural difference, but I'm happy to said I love to game on every console possible, but I do not enjoy playing games on mobile phones. Give me quality, not sales(?) And they decided to do the same thing with another great franchise that I love too: Parasite eve (I don't know if the project of PE3 still lives though.
Sad face.
