Hollywood Adapting "Akira" into 2 Live-Action Films?!

Feb. 21 11:27 PM by Mark Burnham

File under "do not do this."

No matter your sophisticated analysis of whether or not Akira deserves its classic status, or whatever, it is what is it, and is best left unfettered. While they're at it why don't they adapt Princess Mononoake into 4 films starring Jon Heder? Anyway, Warner Bros. recently reacquired the rights to the original graphic novel, Ruairi Robinson (Fifty Percent Gray) will direct, and the first installment is due out summer 2009.

Here's the thing. Akira takes place in post apocalyptic Tokyo, features bitchin' motorcycles, street gangs, creepy children and giant bloody teddy bears. And a great story, a combination Hollywood is likely to fumble or pollute in some way. How is it they can do this an yet the Halo movie never made it off the ground? That's a Hollywood movie in disguise as a video game anyway.

Titanic's Leonardo DiCaprio will produce the film. Irritating detail for some reason.

That website has horrible grammar. "Graphic novel was first adapted for the big screen in 1988...?"
