Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories linked to the US December 2nd

Sep. 19 9:09 AM by Mandifesto

With the understanding that not everyone is as excited as I am to hear the news that Square Enix is releasing Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories in North America, I was still joyful when I received the press release this morning in my inbox. It's not exactly news, except for the release date, but still I smile.

Why, might you ask, would something like a GBA title coming to the PS 2 make my day? Well, it mostly stems from the fact that I play games for the story. I know, shocker, being a writer and all, but I will suffer some of the most inane and annoying gameplay gimmicks if there is a decent story behind it. For me, video games are simply an extension of my love for reading; games to me are an interactive book, where I get to spend as much time with the characters as I like.

So, when it comes to Kingdom Hearts, there have been pieces of the story that I never had (yes, I never owned the GBA, so shoot me); I was playing a game with an incomplete story. Knowing that come December 2nd I will get the chance to finally finish that story make me happy. Yeah, I'm a sap, but at least I'm a self-enlightened sap.

The official press release after the jump.

Really...Not even the KH fansties ahve given a date for RE:CoM..No mention of FM+..meh...Anyway, this is good nonetheless. Thanks Mandifesto.

Well, they must not have their Mickey-Shaped Hotline Phone on their desk connecting direct to KH headquarters like I do. It's always handy when I'm in a keyblade-related crisis.

lol. Not even KHInsider has this, which always has KH news first hand, lol.

I really can't believe they're releasing this without Final Mix +. The original Re:CoM was basically a small add-on to the Final Mix + package for only slightly more then they're selling CoM for by itself. Selling Re:CoM for $30 by itself is just sort of insulting. I could pop over to Play-Asia.com and pick up the Japanese version (with English voices for FM+ and an almost unchanged plot from the GBA version for CoM) for $34.50.

When you've got a company like Atlus releasing Persona 3 FES for $30, releasing what amounts to a bonus game by itself for the cost of a full game is just... man, Square-Enix, what the hell?

Yeah, Einherjar pretty much said everything I was thinking.

KH Insider probably hasn't figured out where Square-Enix's press room is, no. ;)

Awesome, now we can run through largely identical box-shaped rooms in 3-D! I can play it on my PS3 and upscale my boxes to 1080p yeah!!

I strongly suspect this is the result of Sony of America desperately wanting some Q4 support from the PS2 out of Square-Enix, and Squee literally not having anything else for it they could possibly release. They pretty much abandoned the PS2 as a development platform after FFXII.

lol. Well, the only reason I think they are releasing this game is to help break in the VA's for the missing Org. members, and to help interest for 358/2 Days grow. They think "Remember these guys...the Organization?..yeah, in a few months you 'll be able to play as them" lol. I doubt its for any other reason., lol.

Maaaan, that doesn't make it any better.

That still doesn't explain the lack of FM+ in addition to Re:CoM. Heck, if anything, it makes it more confusing, since the bulk of the new Organization XIII stuff occurs in FM+, not in Re:COM.

@Zexion_VI_OrgXIII:

That's an interesting theory re: 358/2 Days, but I'm not convinced the average gamer really cares enough about the Kingdom Hearts metaplot to be more interested in playing as Org XIII than they are in playing a four-man co-op multiplayer Kingdom Hearts. If anything the non-fandom reaction to Kingdom Hearts II's plot was pretty overwhelmingly negative.

I saw the videos for RE: CoM. It looks like it will be a great game for those who missed out on the GBA version. For those who haven't, referring to me in this case, it still looks like a worthy addition to a ps2 collection.
